A strategic analysis of the actions and the sustainable development potential of the universities in the UNITWIN network was first carried out during the first conference in Bordeaux in order to strengthen these actions and develop new ones.

Several ways to cooperate were put forward during the conference and many of them were selected to be developed during the four year term from 2010 to 2013 of the International Francophone Organisation as well as the second part 2010-2014 of the United Nations Decade.

1 – Dynamic report of the Universities in the network

In order for the partners of the UNITWIN network to work together efficiently they must have a good knowledge of each other. This involves knowing all the establishments’ skills in sustainable development, put into a scientific, economic and social context.

3 – Initial and vocational training on sustainable development

It is fundamental to organise initial and professional training courses to meet the needs of teachers, local authorities, companies and society in sustainable development.

Initial training must be given by persons able to transfer their knowledge of the subject through global and cross-subject programmes that are specific to sustainable development.

5 –Digital Library on Sustainable development

The university library of the first Bulgarian university, the University of "Saint Kliment Ohkridski" in Sofia suggested creating a digital library and a data centre on education, training and research for sustainable development.

7 – Basic and Educational Research

It is particularly important to integrate sustainable development more into research programmes.

This research consists of two aspects: basic research and final research with a transfer of knowledge and an emphasis on research into education.

2 – The "Campus Agenda 21" Project

This project should encourage each university to develop practical measures to manage its campus with a global view to sustainable development. This involves a joint reflection and action from all those that use the University as well as its external partners.

4 – Masters in “Sustainable Development"

The creation of a Masters in "Sustainable Development" shared by all the universities in the network is part of a process for initial and vocational training and refers to the recommendations of the various United Nations programmes (EFA, MDG, and DESD).

6 – The "Great Green Wall"

The Community of Sahelo-Saharan States launched a project of global importance to re-vegetate a significant part of sub-Saharan Africa in order to fight against desertification and to improve the environmental, economic and social conditions for the resident population (
